Should I Use Chlorine or Bromine In My Spa?
When it comes to owning a spa in your home, you will need to think about the chemicals that you put in it to make sure that it is clean and ready to use. There are two main choices when it comes to these chemicals. Bromine and Chlorine. They are similar, yet have enough differences that you will need to choose between the two.
But which one is better, and what are these differences?
If your main concern is cost, then chlorine is going to be the best option for you. This is because it is around 20% cheaper than Bromine. Particularly if you buy in bulk. It is important to remember, if you are buying in bulk that Chlorine does have a shelf life of around a year, after that it won’t be as powerful.
Both Bromine and Chlorine are nice and easy to use. They come in tablet form which can be placed into the hot tub, as well as liquid, which will quickly disperse and make sure that your spa is ready to use.
When you are adding chemicals to your spa, then you are likely to be thinking about the strength, and how effective it will be at keeping the water clean. Chlorine is stronger as a chemical. However, Bromine is much better at killing viruses and bacteria then Chlorine is.
Chlorine has a high pH level, around 7.8, which means that it is affected by pH swings much more than Bromine. This is great when a spa is at risk of changing pH levels at the drop of a hat. The other thing about Bromine is that it is stable even at high temperatures, something that Chlorine isn’t always good at.
Whilst they are similar in smell, Chlorine smells a little stronger than Bromine. Both of them pose a risk of irritation for the skin, however, Bromine is slightly less irritating than Chlorine is. Which is important if your family are going to be using the spa.
When it comes to choosing chemicals for your spa, both are similar, however, Bromine comes out slightly on top. It really does depend on what you are looking for and what is important to you. Once you have this in mind, you can decide on the chemical that is going to be best suited to you.
